European Blackjack Strategy

Outside North America the dealer usually takes no hole card. You play your whole hand before the dealer draws. If the dealer then turns a blackjack, what happens to the extra money you put out on doubles and splits defines which game you are playing, and whether your American strategy chart is wrong.

ENHC vs OBO: the only distinction that matters

Full-loss ENHC (most of Europe, Australia, much of Asia): a dealer blackjack collects everything, meaning the original bet, doubles, and split wagers. OBO (“original bets only”, common in the UK): the dealer blackjack takes only your first bet, and your raises are returned. Most players never hear this next part. OBO is mathematically identical to the American Peek game. If your table plays OBO, use the standard peek strategy chart and every number on this site as-is. Only full-loss ENHC changes anything.

What ENHC changes, and why

Every extra chip you put out against a ten or an ace is exposed to a blackjack nobody has checked for. So basic strategy stops raising into that risk. Hard 11 hits instead of doubling against a ten. Aces don't split against an ace. Eights don't split against tens and aces, and several doubles near the dealer's strongest cards become hits. Measured, not copied

Our engine plays the full-loss game outright, with no hole card until you finish and a dealer blackjack collecting every raised bet. At the standard European ruleset (six decks, dealer stands soft 17, double 9–11 only, DAS) it measures a house edge of 0.62%, matching the published literature to the decimal. The betting calculator prices ENHC tables for all eight counting systems, and the same rules are playable on the practice table. The typical European Double Restriction (hard 9–11) and the American Reno variant (10–11) are modeled as their own rule knobs.

One more note: European tables rarely offer surrender, so our ENHC numbers are measured without it. That is the configuration found on casino floors.
